This Ted Talk resonated with me so much as a woman but also as a mother. I want better for my daughter so I strive to encourage her to be brave every day. I see it when friends and family look at me with unspoken question of why I let her climb on the jungle gym without hovering over her or why when she doesn't want to do something I've asked her to do instead of slamming the hammer down and telling her that she needs to listen to me I encourage her to explain her opposition and we work it out. She's only 3 but I want her to know that I have her back and that failing is better than not trying.

sharon, Thank you for sharing this video! I think girls need this reminder & it's up to the rest of us women to teach them. While I don't have kids myself, I believe kids need to be able to test those waters. So what if they get a scrape. It's not the end of the world. I grew up in the 80's & we were on our own playing around more than they are now. I just think of it this way, all the kids who are growing up with the coddling, won't develop a backbone & thicker skin. Those kids also are the ones who will take care of US as we get older. I don't like that thought!

For starters, nobody IS perfect, so the perfection thing is a moot point.
Girls need to think for themselves, with common sense guidelines of course. Wise parents know this.
Get up into that tree, climb on the jungle gym, try different things. If you get scrapes, they'll heal.
You'll get more out of life with bravery than with perfection.

Can't agree with this more. My sister's friend is raising her daughter exactly this way. She gets to try whatever she wants to try, and if she fails, she's not given a ribbon and told she's special, she's told that she can do better next time and encouraged to keep on trying. She's become a very resilient 3 year-old, willing to try and understanding that failures happen. She's probably done more climbing of jungle gyms and scraped her knee more times than most of the boys her age ever will! One day my sister opened the garage door and she, for no reason whatsoever, thought it'd be a great idea to cling to the bottom of it and see how high it would lift her. She got all the way up before she realized she couldn't get back down again and started crying. It was scary, of course, because a fall from that height could do damage, but it was also hilarious to see the wheels turn in her head, grab onto the bottom of the garage door as it lifted, and just get carried to the ceiling like it was no problem at all. She's fearless, and I think that's a fantastic attribute!

Oh wow PGen98 that's really encouraging to read. I truly believe that shaping our children is the surefire way for us to shape our future. Not everyone has to be a leader but oh we really need to encourage our girls to seek out the option. They can't let fear of rejection lead their decisions.

I completely agree, I think it's vital young girls are taught that they're as vital and as valid as boys are. They can and should do exactly what they want to do in life, and likewise, boys should be encouraged to do whatever they want to do in life, as well, even things that might be stereotypical "girls things." One day we'll finally reach a point at which people are just people, and that will be amazing!

Yes!!! I think it's important to communicate that it's ok whether you are male or female that it's OK to have emotions and teach them how to process intense feelings and not just hide them.
Of course, there will be things that men can do better than females e.g. lift things particularly heavy etc while females have a more nurturing nature etc... Let's just aim to discover our own personal strengths and not be judged by our gender - what an awesome world we would have.

I am in IT field and I do agree that, there aren't many women in this field, when compared to men. After getting married, most of them women I know would give up on their career and try to take care of their children.
I plan to adopt someone but I would never give up on my career and usually I am like 'I got the knowledge and power to stand on my own. So, why do I have to lean on others?'. Not many people would think of this but not me. Even in my team, there are just 3 women(including me) whereas there are 11 men. We really need to change that in the near future!

As another person in IT I disagree, my sector was female dominated, I was in marketing and I think that IT sector has a balanced gender ratio. It was me and another 3 guys, while there were 16 women working with us. And one of the guys was more of a help of the team.
Bravery is great to be thought to everyone, girls just need some motivation, and I think we are going towards a place where old people will stop telling their kids what to do. Women should def do construction and play sports, and nothing should stop them from that !
